In the human search for meaning and purpose, people often look outside of themselves for answers. The world abounds with teachers, religions, philosophies, books, organizations, systems, groups, programs, methods, techniques and modalities to assist the earnest seeker on the path. Some of these systems are based in love and aim to empower a person and evoke their highest best self. Some systems are based in fear and control and seek nothing more than their own survival. Of those systems I consider genuine, all lead you in some way or another back to your True Self. In the words of Jesus, "The kingdom of heaven is within you." In other words, you're not going to find what you're looking for "out there."
No amount of psychological or psuedo-spiritual teaching will ever change your heart or your life for you. True change, fulfillment and joy does not come from the outside. Empowerment is a gift that you give yourself. It cannot be imparted because it is already yours. The question is, do you have the courage to step away from the herd, to turn off the phone and the TV, to put down the book and to just sit alone quietly with your Self and "God," however you see God?
If you've been around and observant for any length of time, it is easy to see that humans have a tendency to band together in groups, adopt similar dress, speech and behaviour patterns and engage in all sorts of outward activity in an attempt to feel "a part of" the Whole. If you've engaged in any of these activities (and we all have), and you're courageous enough to be honest, you've noticed something else. Deep down inside, no matter how well you fit in with any group, be it the First Church of the Pink Cadillac, the Hell's Angels or the Boy Scouts, there is a part of you that feels inauthentic. No matter what group you join, give your energy to and hang out with, you will never completely feel connected to the Whole by looking outside yourself.
Authenticity comes from a one-on-one relationship with the Divine and with your True Self. No one can give that to you. The opportunity for that connection is offered freely and continually. Many wonderful teachers exist to point the way. But the door is inside you. No one can open that door but you. The path is inside you. And it is a unique path for each individual. No one can walk your path for you.
If you truly want to be an authentic human being, if you truly wish to be a person of integrity, joy and fulfillment, you can be. All it takes is the courage and commitment to "Be still and know that I Am God." Authenticity comes from within.
